Lady Lions split with Penn College

Monaca, PA -- In a PSUAC double header this afternoon, Beaver faced the Wildcats of Penn College for their second double header of the weekend. In the first game, Beaver took the early lead and never looked back. In the second inning, Rachael Charlier (Burgettstown, PA/Burgettstown) singled and stole second to get herself into scoring position. Taylor Larson (Beaver, PA/Beaver) was then walked to put runners on first and second. With two outs, that came earlier in the inning, Nicole Bowersox (Penns Valley, PA/Penn Valley) doubled to score Charlier. Beaver capitalized on the momentum with Rachel Borrell (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown East) getting walked and then Lauren Pier (New Brighton, PA/New Brighton) was hit by a pitch which also brought in a run before the third out of the inning was made. Beaver added to their lead in the third on a home run by sophomore, Sydney Brinton (Pittsburgh, PA/Brashear) and in the fourth again by the bat of Brinton who doubled to score a runner already on base. Penn College was held scoreless until the seventh inning when they managed to get one run, but it was not enough to overcome the strong defense Beaver played throughout the game. The final score of the first game was 4-1 in favor of Beaver.

Leading the Lady Lions was Brinton who went 2-3 with a double and a home run and Bowersox who went 2-4 with a double as well.

On the mound for Beaver was Korey Freyermuth (Pittsburgh, PA/Perry) who threw all seven innings striking out 4 and only giving up 2 hits.

In the seond game of the afternoon, Beaver again came out scoring quickly producing a run in the bottom of the first on hits by Bowersox, Pier and Brinton to get runners in scoring position. A long fly ball to left by Freyermuth allowed Borrell, who got on base by a fielder's choice earlier in the inning, to score. In the third inning Beaver got their second run of the game on poor defense by Penn College. With Borrell already on second base, Pier reached safely on an error by Penn which also allowed the run to score. After three scoreless innings by Penn, the tides began to turn as Penn got on the board with one run in the fourth inning and eventually added two more in the top of the seventh to put the score at 3-2. Down one in the bottom of the seventh, the Lady Lions started to mount their comeback as they got runners in scoring position, but the pitching and defense by Penn College kept Beaver from tying the game and Beaver fell by a final score of 3-2.

Leading Beaver offensively was Bowersox and Freyermuth who both had two hits. Freyermuth was on the mound again in the second game going seven innings, striking out 3 and only giving up three hits.

The Lady Lions will be back in action on Wednesday, April 10th at 2p.m. when they take on Penn State Fayette at home.
