Lady Lions split in tri-match at WCCC

Youngwood, PA -- The Lady Lions volleyball team went on the road tonight to compete in a tri-match featuring Butler County Community College and host school, Westmoreland County Community College.

The first contest of the night, Beaver faced BCCC and despite being evenly matched with their opponent in terms of size and skill, the Lions did not pass well and their defense struggled. In the first set they also struggled on offense as they were attacking a high number of balls, but had over 10 attacking errors as they fell 25-16. In the second set they seemed to find their momentum but still had holes on defense and fell 25-18. The third set then saw much of the same slow defense and they dropped the third set 25-16.

On the offensive side of the ball, Beaver's middle hitters, Natalie Gamble (McKees Rocks, PA/Sto-Rox) and Kayona Ward (Beaver Falls, PA/Beaver Falls) had decent nights as they combined for 10 kills. On defense it was sophomore, Miranda Pfeiffer (Freedom, PA/Freedom) who was doing her best to keep the Lady Lions passing game alive.

In the second match of the night Beaver took on WCCC in what again shaped up to be an event match in both size and skill. After winning the first set by a score of 25-23, the Lady Lions dropped the second set 26-24. With a new found fire in their bellies, the team then rallied back to win the final two sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-19 to win the match 3-1.

The Lady Lions featured some new additions to their roster in this match including Jocelyn Warfield (Monaca, PA/Central Valley) and Kalynn Hill (Pittsburgh, PA/Montour) who both did some hitting from the outside. Freshman setter, Brittany Davids (Beaver Falls, PA/Blackhawk) also had a standout second match with 7 total service aces.

Tonight's tri-match gives the Lady Lions an overall record of 3-8 as they prepare to open conference play later this week as they travel to Greater Allegheny on Thursday, September 12th for a 7:00 PM start.
