Women's Volleyball Comes Up Short in Hotly Contested PSUAC Opener

McKeesport, Pa- The Greater Allegheny women's volleyball team opened their 2012 PSUAC schedule against Penn State Fayette, but came up short in a hard-fought, 3-0 (6-25, 9-25, 10-25) setback.

After fighting hard through a tough first two sets, the GA women found themselves engaged in a back-and-forth third set.  With four ties in the early going, an important kill from sophomore Christina Floyd (St. John Neumann, PA) kept GA close, down just 10-5. Despite a Fayette run, the Greater Allegheny women again bounced right back, when a service ace from sophomore Corinne Wilson (Bethel Park, PA) brought the score to 14-8. A strong defensive effort kept GA in the set, but Fayette eventually was able to stave off the rally, winning 25-10.

Multiple Greater Allegheny women turned in strong individual efforts, led by sophomore Alyssa Finocchi's (Baldwin, PA) nine kills and one service ace; she also tallied nine digs. Christina Floyd had three kills and a block, while junior Helena Vasser (Schenley, PA) recorded an astounding 29 service receptions.

Greater Allegheny's record falls to 2-6 overall and 0-1 in the PSUAC.  The women will look to bounce back this Saturday, September 22 when they travel to Penn State Beaver.  The PSUAC match is set to start at 12:00 PM.
