Beaver Wins Third Straight in Straight Sets

 

Monaca, PA - The Penn State Beaver Lady Lions Volleyball Team (3-4, 2-0 PSUAC) won a straight set match against PSUAC rival Penn State Greater Allegheny (1-7, 0-2 PSUAC).

In the first set, Greater Allegheny took an early lead on Beaver, 5-1. However, down 9-6, Beaver rallied for eight consecutive points behind stellar service from Gina Richman (Union/Edinburg, PA), to give Beaver a 14-9 lead. Beaver upped its lead to 21-14 before closing out the set by a score of 25-16.

The second set, which proved to be the closest of the afternoon, saw 12 ties and 12 lead changes. Freshman Kayona Ward (Beaver Falls/Beaver Falls, PA) had a kill mid-way through the set to knot the set at 17 apiece. However, after two more ties, Greater Allegheny took the lead at 22-21. Coach Dan Smith called a timeout to focus the team and Beaver responded scoring the next four set points to earn the set 25-22.

Beaver carried momentum from the second set into the third set, as they tied the set at one, then jumped out to a 5-3 lead that ballooned to a 16-3 advantage. Beaver finished off the set with a convincing 25-9 win, sweeping the match.

Beaver was led by Rachel Grubbs (Freeport/Sarver, PA) who had 8 kills, while Ward chipped in with 5 kills of her own. Jenn Fannin (Harbor Creek/Erie, PA) add 6 kills and 4 digs. Ward also added two blocks.

Beaver will host D'Youville College (Buffalo, NY) in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday, September 20 at 7 p.m.
