Gernert led the team with 17 kills and 18 digs

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Freshman Courtney Gernert (Palmyra) notched 17 kills to lead the Pennsylvania College of Technology women's volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Penn State Wilkes Barre in the Penn State University Athletic Conference Championship Semifinals. The match, held at Rec Hall on the campus of Penn State University, was highly contested with back and forth momentum throughout. The Wildcats will face the winner of #1 PSU Fayette and #4 PSU Mont Alto in the Championships.

Penn College (20-8, 16-1 PSUAC) was down early in set one before the Lions made several serving errors to tie it up. The Wildcats then went on a run to go up 15-11, but Wilkes Barre would not give up and eventually came back to win it 26-24.

Set two saw the Wildcats up 6-1 before Wilkes Barre closed the gap at 12 all. Gernert and junior Tara Powell (Burgesttown) stepped up the offense though and led the squad to a 25-22 win. Powell finished the match with 13 kills.

In set three, Penn College was down 21-17 before making a run to take it 25-23. Now up 2-1 in the match, the Wildcats breezed through set four for the 25-12 victory.

Gernet also led the team with 18 digs. Freshman Kasey Smith (New Park) added 17 and Powell and freshman Caitlyn Curley (Middletown) each added 13. Senior Lyndsey Smith (Mechanicsburg) had 47 assists on the night.

The championship game will be held on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 2:30 p.m. in Rec Hall.
