Back-to-Back: Penn State Mont Alto Repeats as Women's Soccer Champs

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State Mont Alto wanted to make sure that nobody thought their PSUAC Women's Soccer title was a fluke last year. They delivered that message loud and clear on a beautiful, sunny Wednesday afternoon at Panzer Stadium on the Penn State University Park campus. 

Loaded with a roster of returners from last season's championship squad, and a host of talented newcomers, Mont Alto controlled the ball and the game as they toppled Penn State Brandywine 5-0 to capture the 2022 PSUAC Women's Soccer Tournament Championship. 

The champs dominated their half of the field, allowing only one shot on goal from Brandywine. That was saved by Kiaya Mouer, and the rest of the game seemingly occurred on Mont Alto's offensive side of the field. Mont Alto outshot their opponents 19-2 for the game, and put 14 on the goal. Alexis Mariano scored two goals early in the second half, which acted as daggers after Mont Alto had already built a 2-0 lead at the half. 

Lacey Daum started the scoring in the 23rd minute after Mont Alto narrowly missed multiple chances early in the contest. Rachel Merrill found the back of the net less than a minute later and the lead would hold through the end of the half. Madison Eberly closed the scoring in the 68th minute off an assist from Mariano as the champs tried to play keep-away for the remainder of the game. Demareste Dorvilma finished with nine saves for Brandywine, doing everything she could in goal to keep Mont Alto at bay. 

Mont Alto advances to the USCAA Women's Soccer Division II National Championship tournament in Virginia Beach, Va. Pool play is scheduled to begin on Friday, November 11, with Mont Alto's matches being played the 12th and 13th.
