CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The Pennsylvania College of Technology women's soccer team defeated #9 University of Maine-Machias 7-9 after nine rounds of penalty kicks in the first round of the United State Collegiate Athletic Association Championships. With the game tied 1-1 in regulation, neither team was able to end it in extra time forcing penalty shots. Sophomore Laresa Paden (Mifflintown) scored the winner for the #8 Lady Wildcats with Machias missing its final shot hitting the crossbar. Freshman Colleen Bowes (Wayne) recorded the win in goal.
Penn College (10-6-2) was outshot 14-3 in the half, but managed to keep the scorecard clear with Bowes making six saves.
Out of the break, freshman Tara Bennethum (Jonestown) took a corner cross from sophomore Robyn Beddow (Lancaster) to score and put the Lady Wildcats up 1-0 at 47:57. The lead held until Machias equalized in the 77th forcing it into overtime.
Next up, Penn College takes on #1 Univ. of Maine – Fort Kent at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 31.
