Women’s Basketball: Lady Wildcats Fall to PSU York 70-54

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Despite 11 points and 10 rebounds from sophomore Jenna Matzinger (Coudersport), the Pennsylvania College of Technology women's basketball team lost 70-54 to Penn State York Tuesday. Freshman Jamie Steer (South Williamsport) added 19 points in the game. The loss drops the team to 11-10 overall and 6-6 in the Penn State University Athletic Conference. They now must win at least one of the two remaining conference matches to earn a berth in the conference playoffs.  

 

Sophomore MacKenzie Brown (Lititz) hit a jumper to stop the 5-0 run the Lions opened the game with. Brown finished the game with 10 points.

 

York proceeded to inch away from Penn College taking its highest lead of the half at 19-10 with just over 10 to play. At 1:38, Matzinger hit a basket and grabbed a bonus to tie it at 30. The Lions ended the period with a mini run going into the break up 34-30.

 

York came out strong in the second taking a 41-32 lead in the first five minutes. A free throw from Jamie Steer in the 12th brought the game to 47-46, the closest the Lady Wildcats would get.

 

For the game, the Lady Wildcats shot only 20-74 (.270) from the field. They out-rebounded York 56-47 with Matzinger leading in rebounds with 10. Senior Kierstin Steer (South Williamsport) notched seven.

 

For York, Lauren Riggleman led all scorers with 26 points and Courtney Riggs added 19 and an impressive 20 rebounds.

 

Next up, Penn College travels to Penn State Scranton on Thursday, Feb. 7 for a 6 p.m. game.
