Brandywine Picks Up Game 1 Win in PSUAC Softball Championship Series

DUBOIS, Pa. - Top-seeded Penn State Brandywine used a late onslaught to capture game one of the 2024 PSUAC Softball Championship series, 5-1, as the teams squared off at Heindl Field in DuBois. The southeastern campus now holds a 1-0 lead over Penn State Mont Alto in the best-of-3 series.

Emily Reagan got the home team on the board first with an RBI single in the first inning. It would remain 1-0 until the third when Mont Alto, the league's number two seed, pushed across a run after Paige Loudenslager reached on an error and Abigail Cunningham scored.

Brandywine added runs as Lexi Bussenger singled up the middle to drive in a run in the fourth and Naya Rivera added an RBI single in the sixth. Reagan broke it open with a two-run double down the left field line for a 5-1 lead. Bussenger, Reagan and Jess James each had two hits for Brandywine, with James also scoring twice. 

Brandywine's Crystal Cassario was excellent in the circle, allowing just one unearned run on seven hits. Cassario commanded the strike zone, striking out four and walking none while throwing 64 strikes out of her 86 total pitches. Her counterpart, Delaney Glazer, struck out five and gave up five runs, three earned, in the outing for Mont Alto.

The team's will meet in game two at 10 a.m. at Nittany Lion Softball Park on the University Park campus.
