Lady Lions open Small College World Series Against VUL

Akron, OH -- Beaver, the #8 seed in the USCAA Small College Softball World Series, opened tournament play this afternoon at 12:00 PM as they faced #9 seed Universityof Virginia of Lynchburg.

As the home team, Beaver quickly retired the side in both the first and second innings and started to put runs on the board in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs and Taylor Larson (Beaver, PA/Beaver) on first, Rachael Charlier (Burgettstown, PA/Burgettstown) singled to put runners at first and second. After both runners advanced on a passed ball, Larson then scored on another passed ball to earn the Lady Lions their first run of the game.

VUL answered with two runs in the top of the third inning making the score 2-1 after two and a half innings, but Beaver was quick to regain the lead scoring two runs on RBI singles by both Korey Freyermuth (Pittsburgh, PA/Perry) and Sydney Brinton (Pittsburgh, PA/Brashear).

Beaver continued to score into the fourth inning as five players manufactured hits which advanced base runners and ultimately lead to a seven run inning for the Lady Lions giving them a 10-0 lead after four innings. Hitting in the inning were Charlier, Nicole Bowersox (Penns Valley, PA/Penn Valley), Brinton and Larson who all singled and Freyermuth who doubled.

Virginia - Lynchburg did score one run in the top of the fifth, but it was not near enough of a rally to get them back into the game. Beaver added a final run in the bottom of the fifth inning coming off of an error by VUL allowing Brittany Phillips (Aiquippa, PA/Aliquippa) to score the game winnng run. Beaver won by a final score of 11-3 which advanced them to the second round of play.

Leading the offense were Bowersox, Larson and Freyermuth (3 RBI's) who each had two hits in the game as well as Brinton who also added 2 RBI's.

On the mound was senior, Korey Freyermuth, who threw five innings earning the win with five strike outs and only giving up 5 hits.

Their second round game, scheduled for 6:00 PM, will be against #1 seed Briarcliffle College.
