Beaver wins 2013 PSUAC Softball Championship

Mont Alto, PA -- After two big wins yesterday, the Lady Lions went into today's championship game against Penn State Hazleton undefeated in the tournament.

The game opened with great pitching and defense on both sides of the ball as Hazleton had just one hit in the first two innings and Beaver had none. In the top of the third inning Hazleton again was hitless, but the Beaver bats started to come alive. A lead off bunt by freshman, Myranda Robson (Rochester, PA/Rochester) was followed by a single by Nicole Bowersox (Penns Valley, PA/Penn Valley) to put runners on first and second. A double steal advanced both runners and with one out, Sydney Brinton (Pittsburgh, PA/Brashear) grounded out, but was able to score both runners on the play earning her 2 RBI's to give Beaver the 2-0 lead after three innings.

The Lady Lions continued to score in the fifth inning as Brinton singled again with one out to give Beaver their first base runner of the inning. With two outs, Beaver rallied and Taylor Larson (Beaver, PA/Beaver) hit a crucial single to put runners on first and second. After both runners advanced on two passed balls, which ultimately scored Brinton, Rachael Charlier (Burgettstown, PA/Burgettstown) was walked and Larson scored on the passed ball giving Beaver a 4-0 lead midway through the inning. Beaver's two out rally forced Hazleton to make defensive changes as well as a pitching change, but the new pitcher was not enough to stop Beaver from continuing to score. Walks for both Amanda Palombo (Aliquippa, PA/Quigley) and Constance Robinson (Chicago, IL/University of Chicago Charter) loaded the bases again for the Lady Lions. Then, it was freshman, Myranda Robson again with a clutch hit to score two more runs in the inning to give Beaver a 6-0 lead which would end up being the final score of the game and give Beaver their second consecutive PSUAC Softball Chapionship win.

Leading the offense today, and also being named to the All-Tournament team were Sydney Brinton (2 for 2, 2 RBI's) and Myranda Robson (3 for 4, 2 RBI's). Larson also went 2 for 3 from the plate in this afternoons victory.

On the mound was senior, Korey Freyermuth (Pittsburgh, PA/Perry) who threw a shut-out givng up just two hits. Her performance in the tournament not only earned her a spot on the All-Tournament team but she was also named Tournament MVP.

Beaver's Championship win secure's their trip to the USCAA National Tournament in Akron, Ohio which is scheduled to begin May 13th at Firestone Stadium.
