Beaver wins tight game with Mont Alto to advance to the PSUAC Championship

Mont Alto, PA -- In their second game of the afternoon, Beaver faced #1 Mont Alto at 5:00 p.m., a rematch of last seasons PSUAC Championship game.

After Mont Alto jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, Beaver answered in the second inning as their bats came alive. Leading off the top of the inning was Lauren Pier (New Brighton, PA/New Brighton) who singled and advanced to second with a stolen base. The next batter, Sydeny Brinton (Pittsburgh, PA/Brashear) also singled and was able to advance to second as Pier stole third and eventually scored. With a runner on second, Myranda Robson (Rochester, PA/Rochester) was walked and then Taylor Larson (Beaver, PA/Beaver) reached on an error which allowed Brinton to score, tying the game at 2-2. Beaver added an additional run before ending the inning to give them the 3-2 lead at the end of the second.

For the next three innings both teams played great defense and had outstanding pitching as neither team allowed a run until the sixth inning when Beaver added their fourth run of the game on a double by Constance Robinson (Chicago, IL, University of Chicago Charter) who later scored on an RBI single by Robson. But it wasn't long until Mont Alto answered. In the bottom of the inning they answered with two runs of their own to tie the game at 4-4 after 2 errors came from the outfield of Beaver.

As the tension mounted, Beaver was at bat in the top of the inning. With one out, Amanda Palombo (Aliquippa, PA/Quigley) singled to give Beaver a base runner. She was able to advance to second on ground out by Rachel Borrell (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown East) and then to third on a passed ball. With a hot bat Korey Freyermuth (Pittsburgh, PA/Perry) was the next Lady Lion to step to the plate. Afraid to take a chance on having her hit in the potential winning run, Mont Alto elected to intentionally walk Freyermuth but was called on an illegal pitch when the catcher left the catchers box which advanced Palombo home. This gave Beaver the lead 5-4. Mont Alto looked to get back into the game with a lead off double in the bottom of the inning, but the tough defense of Beaver was too much for them to overcome and Beaver took the win.

On the mound and earning the win was Freyermuth who struck out 7 batters and gave up 10 hits in one of the most important wins of the season.

Beaver will return to action tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m. as they look to defend their PSUAC Championship in Mont Alto, PA.
