Beaver wins two to clinch playoff spot

Monaca, PA -- In the last conference match-up of the season, Beaver hosted Penn State Hazleton in an afternoon double header. In game one, Hazleton jumped out to an early two run lead, but it wasn't long before Beaver answered. In the bottom of the third inning with the bases loaded, Lauren Pier (New Brighton, PA/New Brighton) hit a 2 RBI single to open the scoring for the Lady Lions. With runners advancing on passed balls, Sydney Brinton (Pittsburgh, PA/Brashear) stepped to the plate and hit a 2 RBI single of her own to give the Lady Lions a four run lead after three innings. They added to their lead in the fourth inning as Rachel Borrell (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown East) walked, advanced on a wild pitch to second and then was hit to third allowing her to score on a double by Nicole Bowersox (Penns Valley, PA/Penn Valley). Bowersox then stole a base of her own, and on the pick off attempt was able to score on an error by the catcher to give Beaver two runs in the inning. The Lady Lions stayed hot at the plate for the remainder of the game as doubles by Brinton and Taylor Larson (Beaver, PA/Beaver) helped add to their lead in the fifth inning and a walk off sacrifice fly by freshman, Myranda Robson (Rochester, PA/Rochester) scored Pier to end the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Beaver won the game by a final score of 11-3.

Bowersox and Brinton lead the Lions offensively with 3 hits a piece as well as Brinton adding 4 RBI's in the game.

Korey Freyermuth (Pittsburgh, PA/Perry) was on the mound tossing a complete game only giving up 5 hits in the contest.

In the second game of the afternoon, Beaver came out swinging again scoring four runs in the bottom of the first. Leading off was Borrell who singled and then scored on a double by Freyermuth. With Freyermuth at second, Bowersox was the next Lady Lion to double and advance the runner. With one out, Brinton hit a single to score the two runners and add to her impressive RBI total today (7) before scoring herself on a sacrifice fly by Robson. Hazleton then edged back into the game scoring a run in the second inning, but Beaver held on to their lead scoring runs in the third and fourth innings to make the score 6-1 after four innings of play. Two runs by Hazleton in the fifth inning kept Beaver on their toes, but it wasn't enough to keep Beaver from earning their second win of the afternoon as they came out victorius by a score of 7-3.

Sydney Brinton lead the Lady Lions offensively with 3 hits and 3 RBI's in the game.

Senior, Korey Freyermuth, pitched her last regular season home game today going 7 innings striking out 4 and giving up just 9 hits and 3 runs. Two wins today from Freyermuth ensures that the Lady Lions make the PSUAC playoffs and continue on their journey toward defending their 2012 conference championship.

Beaver wraps up their season this week as they are scheduled to play non-conference games against Franciscan University and Geneva College on the road. They will travel to Franciscan on Tuesday for a 3:00 p.m. start.
