Softball Picks Up First Win in Thrilling Double-Header Split

Pittsburgh, Pa- Sophomore Kelli Hall (McKeesport, PA/McKeesport) scored the winning run in game two and collected three hits, as the Greater Allegheny (1-4) softball team split a pair of extra inning games with Westmoreland CC, by the scores of 9-8 and 11-10.

Despite trailing multiple times early in game one, GA found itself in front following four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Junior Samantha Segiel (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) led-off with a single, and later advanced to third on a wild pitch. A walk put two on with no outs, allowing junior Jessica Yanosky (West Newton, PA/Yough) to plate two runs as she belted a two-RBI double. Freshman Shelby Bendick (White Oak, PA/McKeesport) singled home Yanosky, with freshman Nichole Metzler (California, PA/California) driving in the fourth run of the inning via her groundout to short.

Up 7-4 and looking to close out the game, Greater Allegheny allowed WCCC to take an 8-7 lead, as the visitors scratched across two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. Hall opened GA's last at-bats with a double, and later scored the game's tying run on a sacrifice fly from freshman Sydney Harris (Pittsburgh, PA/Woodland Hills). Westmoreland CC retaliated with a run in the top of the eighth, and kept GA off the board in the bottom, sealing the win.

Sophomore Jordyn Holsing (McKeesport, PA/Elizabeth Forward) collected two hits and had two RBI's, while Segiel and freshman Ashley Lowenstein (San Jose, CA/Presentation) notched two hits as well.

Through four and a half innings in game two, Greater Allegheny trailed by a seemingly insurmountable score of 8-1. Holsing and Bendick singled to open the GA fifth, and both advanced by stealing their respective bases. Lowenstein drove in both runners with a single, and then stole second. Kelli Hall then drove in Lowenstein, cutting the lead to 8-4.

An error and three consecutive run-scoring hits tied the game at 8-8, with an RBI single from Metzler giving GA the 9-8 advantage. WCCC answered with a run in the top of the seventh to force extras, and then took a 10-9 lead heading into the home half of the eighth.

Kelli Hall plated Bendick with an RBI single, knotting the score at 10-10. With bases loaded and two outs, junior Kimberly Hall (McKeesport, PA/McKeesport) reached on an error, which scored the games winning run.

Holsing and Lowenstein led GA with three hits in the game, with Lowenstein adding three RBI's. Kelli Hall finished 2-5 with two RBI's of her own, as Bendick added two hits and drove in one run. Bendick (1-2) also earned the win on the mound.
