Beaver struggles against Division III Thiel College

Monaca, PA -- On Thursday afternoon the Lady Lions faced Division III, Thiel College, in a double header. In the first game, Beaver gave up five runs in the first four innings and were only able to get two hits coming from juniors, Lauren Pier (New Brighton, PA/New Brighton) in the first inning and Nicole Bowersox (Penns Valley, PA/Penn Valley) in the third inning. Going into the fifth inning, Beaver not playing bad defense thus far, then comitted three errors in the fifth and in combination with Thiel hitting very well gave up eight runs on six hits. With the score going into the bottom of the inning, 13-0, the Lady Lions tried to mount a come back with hits coming from Bowersox and senior, Korey Freyermuth (Pittsburgh, PA/Perry) and a run scored by Myranda Robson (Rochester, PA/Rochester) who was walked to start the inning, but it was not enough and Beaver fell by a final score of 13-1.

On the mound for Beaver was Freyermuth who threw all five innings giving up 14 hits, 13 runs and only striking out one.

In the second game of the afternoon, Beaver again got off to a slow start giving up 7 runs in the first four innings before doing some scoring of their own. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Sydney Brinton (Pittsburgh, PA/ Brashear) walked and was advanced on a Rachel Borrell (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown East) single. The next batter was Amanda Palombo (Aliquippa, PA/Quigley) who reached on a error by Thiel which scored Brinton. Thiel continued to play poor defense and ultimately gave up two runs to give Beaver some hope. The Lady Lions then held Thiel to just one run in both the fifth and sixth innings and were able to mount a comeback in the bottom of the inning. With the score 9-2, the Lady Lions were able to produce base runners on errors and several fielder's choices by Thiel. With the bases loaded Bowersox doubled to bring in two runs and prompted a Thiel pitching change. Facing the new pitcher was Rachael Charlier (Burgettstown, PA/Burgettstown) who was unphased and singled to score another run. But again the late push wasn't enough as the Lady Lions fell by a score of 9-6.

Leading the offense was Bowersox with two hits, one being a double. Also contributing were Charlier, Freyermuth, Borrell and Robson who all had a hit in the game.

On the mound again was Freyermuth who faced 36 batters giving up 15 hits, and only striking out two.

The Lady Lions are back in action on Saturday as they head to Penn State New Kensington at 2 p.m. to open conference play.
