Beaver splits home opener

Monaca, PA -- After weeks of bad weather and poor field conditions kept the Lady Lions off the field, they were finally able to play their first game since spring break. In their home opener, they faced Carlow University who is currently ranked #1 in the USCAA.

In the first game of the double header, the Lady Lions started off their first at bat with two strike outs, but came to life on a Lauren Pier (New Brighton, PA/New Brighton) walk. Following her was Korey Freyermuth (Pittsburgh, PA/Perry) who singled to advance Pier. Despite getting two runners on base Beaver was unable to produce a run. It wasn't until the third inning that the Lady Lions came to life at the plate again. Freshman, Taylor Larson (Beaver, PA/Beaver) reached on an error and later scored on a hit to shallow right field by Nicole Bowersox (Penns Valley, PA/Penn Valley). Beaver was then held in check by Carlow for the remainder of the game as the Celtics got the win 6-1.

Leading the offense for Beaver was Freyermuth with two hits and Rachel Borrell (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown East) who also had a hit in the game. On the mound was Freyermuth who in seven innings gave up 10 hits, 6 runs but struck out 3.

Game two of the double header saw bats come alive for Beaver. In the bottom of the second with the game still scoreless, Freyermuth singled, followed by a Sydney Brinton (Pittsburgh, PA/Brashear) walk. Next at the plate was freshman, Rachael Charlier (Burgettstown, PA/Burgettstown) who advanced the runners on a sacrifice. With runenrs on second and third, Larson got on base on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on an error which also scored a run. Carlow then answered with two runs of their own in the top of the third. Going into the bottom of the fourth inning, the score 2-1 in favor of Carlow, Brinton hit a solo home run to tie the game. For the next three innings it was a defensive battle. Carlow only gave up one hit to the Lady Lions and Beaver was able to keep Carlow in check as well. As the game entered the eighth inning, the Lady Lions held Carlow scoreless once more and then they went to work at the plate. With Pier starting on second, a ground out by Freyermuth advanced Pier to third base. With one out, Charlier layed down a nearly perfect bunt reaching base safely and scoring Pier to win the game by a score of 3-2.

The Lady Lions had a total of 8 hits in the game lead by Sydney Brinton with a home run and Rachel Borrell and Rachael Charlier who both had two hits. On the mound was Korey Freyermuth who threw a great game only giving up 4 hits in 8 innings and striking out 3.

The Lady Lions are scheduled to be back in action Tuesday, April 2 at 3pm when they take on CCBC and hold their annual t-shirt giveaway day!
