Lady Lions Take Two From Hazleton, Remained Tied for First
Hazleton, PA- The Lady Lions traveled to Hazleton, PA for the first of two East Cross over double headers on Friday.
In Game one, Beaver struck first in the top of the first. After leadoff batter Lauren Pier (New Brighto/ New Brighton, PA) reached on and error, and stole second and third, Senior Lindsey Scialdone (Ellwood/Ellwood City, PA) hit a sacrifice fly to score the games first run. In the bottom of the second, Hazleton put three hits together, with the last being a 3 run home run, for Hazleton to take a 3-1 lead. Pitcher Korey Freyermuth (Perry/Pittsburgh, PA) did not allow a baserunner from the second inning on. In the 4th, Beaver pulled with in one after Sophomore Myranda Raymond's (Brashear/Pittsburgh, PA) one out single followed by a Freyermuth Double to pull with in 3-2. Beaver took the lead for good in the fifth. Senior Ashley Watkins (Seneca Valley/ Cranberry Twp, PA) and Raymond both had RBI's to put the lead to 4-3. It was Watkins and Raymond at it again in the 7th, adding an insurance run. Watkins walked and Raymond followed with an RBI triple. Beaver finished on top, 5-3.
In the win, Freyermuth pitched seven strong innings, giving up three hits, while walking one and striking out seven. Raymond led the offense with 2 hits and 2 RBI's. Freshman Nicole Bowersox (Penns Valley, Penns Valley, P) added two hits as well.
In game two, Hazleton scored first in the second, before Beaver broke it open in the third, scoring six runs. Beaver led 6-2 after three. Beaver added insurance runs in the 4th and 5th, to win the game 8-2.
Raymond and Bowersox led the 16 hit attack with three a piece. Pier, Scialdone, Brinton, and Karpinski each recorded two hits a piece. No hit was bigger than Senior Jamie Karpinski's 3 run home run in the six run third inning. Freyermuth was spectacular on the mound again, throwing seven innings, giving up two hits, one earned run, while walking one and striking out six.
Beaver returns to action tomorrow, Saturday, when they travel to Penn State Scanton. The double header starts at 11 a.m.
