Freyermuth throws a one-hitter in a Beaver win

Troutville, VA – In the second game of the afternoon, Penn State Beaver faced Southern State Community College.  The Lady Lions opened up the scoring in the second inning when Lindsey Scialdone (Ellwood City/Ellwood City, PA) singled and advanced to second and then third on passed balls.  Korey Freyermuth (Perry Traditional/Pittsburgh, PA) was then walked and Scialdone was able to score on another passed ball as Freyermuth advanced to second on a Sydney Brinton (Brashear/Pittsburgh, PA) walk.  On yet another passed ball both runners advanced to second and third and then Korey scored on a second passed ball in the at bat.  After a SSCC pitching change, Jamie Karpinski (Quigley Catholic/Beaver, PA) grounded out to advance Brinton to third.  The next batter, Rachel Borrell (Downington East/Downingtown, PA) singled scoring Brinton.  As the hits continue to roll, Lauren Pier (New Brighton/New Brighton) was the next Lady Lion to single and advance Borrell to second.  Nicole Bowersox (Penns Valley/Penn Valley, PA) was then walked, which advanced both runners leaving the bases loaded.  Next in the batting order was Ashley Watkins (Seneca Valley/Cranberry Township, PA) who hit a sacrifice fly to score Borrell.  Adding another hit to the inning was Myranda Raymond (Brashear/Pittsburgh, PA) who also singled scoring Pier.  As the inning came to a close, the Lady Lions head into the third with a 5-0 lead.  Good defense kept SSCC off the board and the Lady Lions scored two more runs in the fifth inning on hits by Watkins, Raymond and Scialdone.  Going into the sixth inning up 7-0, the hits continued to come for Beaver.  Pier opened up the inning with a lead off double followed by a sacrifice bunt by Bowersox to advance Pier to third.  Watkins then singled scoring Pier.  With Watkins on base, Raymond had a single but was able to advance to third on errors leaving her in great scoring position.  Scialdone singled to score Raymond making the score 10-0.  In accordance with the Spring Classic rules, the game was called in the sixth inning because Beaver was ahaead by more than 8 runs.  

Offensively, Raymond and Scialdone lead the team in hits with three a piece follwed by Pier and Watkins who both had two.  Borrell also contributed a hit.  

On the mound for the Lady Lions was Freyermuth who pitched a one hitter.  She faced 16 total batters in 5 innings pitched striking out 7.  In relief, Watkins pitched the last inning facing 5 batters and only giving up one hit.

This win puts the Lady Lions at 3-12 on the season and 2-0 so far this afternoon.  Beaver plays again at 8:00 pm.
