Bassham, Mont Alto Lead After Day 1 of PSUAC Golf Championships

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Despite some sun, it was a chilly and windy day on the Penn State Blue Course as more than 115 golfers teed up in the first round of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Golf National Championship tournament. The PSUAC Golf Championship, held concurrently, features nearly 50 golfers vying for both a conference and national title on the same course over the two-day event.

Penn State Mont Alto commands the PSUAC team race, leading its closest competitor, Penn State York, by 13 shots. Mont Alto finished the day, which featured steady 15-20 mile per hour winds, at 316 with York coming in at 329. Mont Alto's score is also third in the USCAA out of the 17 participating institutions.

Mont Alto's Jacob Bassham conquered the weather as well as anybody, shooting a 2-over par 74 to lead the PSUAC portion of the event by three strokes over Penn State Wilkes-Barre's Charlie Melvin. Bassham's teammate Ryan Small came in after day one with a 78.

The PSUAC is represented by four more players in the top 20 of the USCAA, with Penn State DuBois' Brock Smith, Penn State Fayette's Dylan Pawlak, York's Andy Manges and Mont Alto's Hunter Flickinger tied for 16th overall after a first round score of 80. Those four players are tied for fourth in the PSUAC.

Fayette sits in third place in the PSUAC team segment, finishing the day at 334, six strokes ahead of fourth place team Penn State Shenango. York is seventh overall in the PSUAC, with Fayette also in the top 10 at ninth place as a team.

The final round of the PSUAC and USCAA Golf Championships will be held on Tuesday, October 15th at the Penn State Blue Course beginning with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. The USCAA and PSUAC awards ceremonies will immediately follow the final round in the Hawbaker Pavilion adjacent to the Penn State Golf Shop. On top of USCAA All-American honors, the PSUAC names its top 10 finishers as All-Conference honorees to go along with its team and individual champions.
