Mont Alto's Small leads, Hazleton takes team lead after Round 1 at Championships

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State Hazleton's team picked up where it left off at the Penn State Blue Course, shooting a team total 306 on day one of the PSUAC and USCAA Golf Championships. The PSUAC event is held concurrently with the USCAA Golf National Championships, a two-day, 36-hole affair.

Hazleton won the PSUAC Blue Course Invitational two weeks ago with a team-record 296. Tougher conditions on Monday led to slightly higher scores, but Hazleton's team total was still lower than champions scores in the event historically. Dylan Antolick led the way with a 2-over par 74, which is second in the PSUAC and tied for fourth overall in the USCAA.

Antolick trails only Penn State Mont Alto's Ryan Small who fired a 73 on a chilly, windy day. Small's one shot lead is just two better than third place, where Penn State Fayette's Dylan Pawlak sits at 75.

Hazleton's Joey Rebarchick, who has played the Blue Course well in recent years, is tied for fourth in the PSUAC after a first round 76. He's tied with Penn State York's Tony Benkovic, which is also good enough for sixth in the USCAA. Overall, the PSUAC has six players in the top 13 in the USCAA as Jeremy Harper rounds out the PSUAC with a 5-over par 77.

Hazleton had four players in the 70's for the second straight round at the Blue Course as Colin Hoy shot 79 to join Antolick, Rebarchick and Harper in the team score total. Their lead is 11 over Mont Alto, whose Brennan Sease also shot 79. York sits in third in the PSUAC team race at +35 with Mason Steward and Andy Manges shooting 78 and 79 respectively to join Benkovic. Their fourth best score was 90, however, which helped Mont Alto build a six-shot lead for second place.

Hazleton sits in second place in the USCAA team race, just five strokes behind Lyon College, the current team leader at +13. The USCAA and PSUAC Championships count the top four scores from the five players identified for team scoring. Additional individuals are also allowed to participate, but do not count towards team scoring.

The final round the PSUAC and USCAA Golf Championships will tee-off on Tuesday, October 10th at 8:30 a.m. at the Penn State Blue Course. The shotgun start will be followed by lunch and an awards ceremony for participating players at approximately 2:30 p.m.
