Penn State Greater Allegheny Wins 2023 PSUAC Men's Basketball Title

BOX SCORE

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State Greater Allegheny captured the 2023 PSUAC Men's Basketball Tournament Championship on Monday, toppling Penn State Wilkes-Barre 82-70 in the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus of Penn State University. The win is Greater Allegheny's second championship since 2017 and earns them the PSUAC's automatic bid in the USCAA National Championship tournament.

Greater Allegheny, the no. 2 seed from West Division, started fast and held off multiple Wilkes-Barre rallies throughout the game to earn the win. Greater Allegheny held a 10-2 and 16-4 advantages before the 13 minute mark of the first half. They extended the lead to 27-9 before Wilkes-Barre, the East Division's no. 3 seed, started chipping away with less than five minutes to play in the half, and would finish on a 14-4 run to pull within 10 midway through the contest.

Early in the second half, Wilkes-Barre cut their deficit to seven on multiple occasions, but couldn't get closer as Greater Allegheny had an answer, eventually extending the lead back to 13 midway through the second half. Over the next four minutes though, Wilkes-Barre went on a tear to pull within two on a Jalen Willis three, making it 61-59. But once again Greater Allegheny would compose themselves for an 11-3 rally that put the contest out of reach.

Greater Allegheny's Bryce Phillips had a team-high 20 points, leading four players in double figures for the champs. Chris Killings added 17, Devin Green 16 and Jeremiah Miller had 15. Miller added a game-high 11 rebounds. Willis led all scorers with 21 for Wilkes-Barre while teammate Tyson Tanner, Jr. added 15. Jaymes Jackson had 12 points while Rashod Ballard added 12 off the bench.

The game had more meaning for Greater Allegheny, who needed a win to advance to the USCAA National Championship tournament. Wilkes-Barre had already earned the no. 1 seed in the USCAA, set to begin March 12 in Richmond, Va. at the Virginia State University campus.
