Beaver picks up two conference wins against Wilkes-Barre

Monaca, PA -- This afternoon Beaver faced Penn State Wilkes-Barre in a PSUAC match-up. After a quiet first inning, Beaver bats came alive in the second inning. Seniors Jim Musgrave (Econonmy, PA/Ambridge) and Cory Wagner (Monaca, PA/Center) were walked to open the inning. Freshman, Michael Ross (New Castle, PA/Neshannock) then singled to advance the runners and earn an RBI. The second run of the inning was batted in by Mike Karas on a fly out to left field. In the third and fourth innings the Lions kept Wilkes-Barre off the scoreboard while adding three more runs with the score 5-0 in favor of Beaver heading into the fifth inning. Scoring two runs in the fifth, Wilkes-Barre attempted a come back but the Beaver offense was too much. In the bottom of the fifth Musgrave singled and was replaced by pinch runner, Rob Trhlin (Chesterland, OH/West Geauga) and then a triple by Wagner scored Trhlin. With Wagner at third, a long fly ball to center field by Bill Harrington (Monaca, PA/Central Valley) scored Wagner and the Lions got back the two runs they gave up. Wilkes-Barre was never able to generate any more offense and Beaver added three more runs in the sixth making the score 10-2, a defict too big to overcome.

Leading the offense today, in the first game, for the Lions was Grant Scott (Sewickly, PA/Ann Arbor Pioneer) who was 2 for 2 with a double, Jim Musgrave who went 2 for 3 , Cory Wagner who went 2 for 3 with a double and a triple, and Mike Ross who also had two hits.

On the mound was Vincent Beatty(Rochester, PA/Rochester) who went six innings giving up 7 hits, 2 runs but struck out 6 batters. Also pitching was Mike Ross who threw one inning giving up just one hit in four batters faced.

In the second game of the double header, Wilkes-Barre opened the game scoring a run, but Beaver quikly answered scoring two in the first coming from a Markus Allen (New Caslte, PA/Union) homerun, his second of the season. Again, Wilkes-Barre fought back scoring another run in the second inning and again Beaver answered scoring two runs on hits by Bill Harrington, Markus Allen, and an Alex Filippi (Aliquippa, PA/Center) double. Both teams played tight defense in the middle innings of the game as Beaver didn't give up any runs in the third and fourth and Wilkes-Barre only gave up one. With the score 5-2 going into the fifth inning, Wilkes-Barre put two more runs on the board but Beaver answered in the sixth with two runs of their own playing good small ball. In a last effort by Wilkes-Barre they added one run in the top of the seventh, but could not over take Beaver and the final score was 7-5.

Leading the offense in this game was Markus Allen who went 3 for 3 with a homerun and a double and Alex Filippi who went 2 for 3 with a double.

On the mound to start the game was Matt Sweikowski (Zelienople, PA/Seneca Valley) who pitched four innings giving up 6 hits and 2 runs while striking out four. With the save was Ryan Hudacsek (Eceonomy, PA/Ambridge) who faced the last two batter to end the game.

The Lions are now 3-1 in the PSUAC and will play again tomorrow afternoon as they face PSUAC rival Penn College at 12PM.
