Wildcats Put On Offensive Show in Sweep of PSU Scranton

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Pennsylvania College of Technology baseball team totaled 21 hits and 40 runs to sweep Penn State Scranton in conference action Thursday.  Penn College won 27-0 and 13-0 and improves to 20-9 overall and 11-3 in the Penn State University Athletic Conference.  Sophomores Jacob Wrenn (Granville, Mass) and Phil Carnevale (Carteret, N.J.) recorded the wins with shutouts.  Senior Skylar Gingrich led all players with eight RBI in the two games.

In game one, Gingrich put the Wildcats up 2-0 in the first with a two run bomb over the left field wall.  Senior Thomas Hughes (Easton) singled for two RBI capping off a five-run second.  Gingrich, senior Garrett Hornung (Emporium) and freshman Travis Hendershot (Muncy) each earned an RBI in the inning.  Hughes ended the game 3-6 with six RBI while Gingrich was 4-5 with six RBI. 

Penn College put up 12 runs in the third making it a 19-0 game.  Hughes, Hornung, Hendershot and sophomore Cody Buterbaugh (Conestoga) each had two RBI in the inning.  Hendershot and Hornung each ended with three RBI while Cody Buterbaugh had two.  

The Wildcats put up eight final runs in the fourth as Wrenn cruised through the fifth ending the game in five.  Wrenn finished allowing only one hit with nine strikeouts.

Penn College's offensive effort totaled 19 hits, nine with extra bases.  Also for the team, senior Jared Johnson (Wyalusing) had three hits, including a double, and two RBI and freshman Zachary Buterbaugh (Conestoga) had three hits with four runs.

In game two, after a scoreless first, freshman Zachary Weil (Kutztown) led things off hitting his first career homerun as a Wildcat.  RBI from Hughes, Hornung freshman Zachary Smith (Middletown) and sophomore Josh Longsderff (Columbia) followed making it a 5-0 game.

Weil finished the game with two hits and an RBI.

Another five runs came in the second capped off by a two-RBI single from Gingrich.  Freshman Jason Stewart (Latrobe) recorded his first career RBI in the inning.  Three runs in the fourth including a two RBI triple from freshman Michael Scully (Middletown, Del.) put it out of reach and ended it early.

Carnevale recorded the win pitching four innings with four strikeouts.  Zachary Buterbaugh came in relief pitching an inning with two strikeouts.

Penn College totaled 12 hits in the game.

 Next up, the Wildcats host Penn State Wilkes Barre on Saturday, Apr. 21 for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
