Pennsylvania College of Technology split a conference doubleheader with Penn State Beaver

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior Skylar Gingrich (Lititz) racked up four hits, three RBI and two runs to lead the Pennsylvania College of Technology baseball team as it split a conference doubleheader with Penn State Beaver Sunday.  The Wildcats took game one 6-4 with sophomore Josh Longsderff (Columbia) getting the complete game win.  Beaver just edged out the Wildcats for the win in game two getting the winning run in the seventh for a 3-2 victory.  Penn College improves to 12-6 overall and 5-1 in the Penn State University Athletic Conference while Beaver is 7-6 and 3-1, respectively.

In game one, errors were a major focus with Beaver committing four and the Wildcats two.  Beaver starter Zack DelTurco pitched a complete game allowing only two hits, six earned runs and five strikeouts.  Wildcat starter Longsderff had a similar go with six hits, two earned runs and three strikeouts.    

 In the first, Longsderff had some control issues hitting two batters.  Beaver capitalized as Markus Allen hit a double to left scoring one.  A sloppy bottom of the inning from the Lions allowed Penn College to score three unearned runs off of three errors.  Senior Jared Johnson (Wyalusing) hit an RBI sacrifice fly in the inning.  Two more errors in the second from the Penn College defense allowed the Lions to score an unearned run in the second making it a 3-2 game.

After Beaver scored two in the third to take the 4-3 lead, the Wildcats tied it up in the bottom when Johnson hit into a fielder's choice scoring freshman Zachary Smith (Middletown).

 In the fifth, Gingrich hit a scorcher into left field to score two and give Penn College the 6-4 lead.  It would hold, ending the game in the team's favor.  Gingrich ended the game with the only two hits for Penn College.

In game two, Penn College went up 1-0 in the first after Gingrich hit a liner to left field scoring senior Garrett Hornung (Emporium).  Gingrich finished the game with two hits while Hornung finished the game 2-2 with a run.

Starter Harrison Myers (Lebanon) had a no hitter going into the fourth until Cory Wagner hit a double to right center scoring two.  Myers had two outs but hit and walked a batter bringing Wagner to the plate.

The game was tied right away in the bottom of the inning when freshman Craig Watson (McEwensville) hit a two-out, RBI single.  Gingrich and Johnson led the inning off with back-to-back singles.

After a scoreless sixth, rain came in causing a 15 minute delay in the game.  The Lions used the delay to their advantage as they got leadoff hitter Andy Dipietrantonio on with a walk.  After getting him into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, Alex Filippi singled to left to score.  Pitcher Tyler Schuster set the Wildcats down in order for the win in the bottom of the inning pitching the complete game.

Sophomore Phil Carnevale (Carteret, N.J.) records the loss.  He came in the fifth for Myers and pitched 2.1 innings with a run, one hit and one strikeout.  

 Next up, Penn College travels to Penn State York for a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday, Apr. 3.
