Brandywine Softball Picks Up Two Wins Monday, Including 8th Straight PSUAC Championship

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State Brandywine needed two wins on Monday at Nittany Lion Softball Park to keep their championship streak alive. They got them in convincing fashion after rain delayed Sunday's action and pushed one game to Monday.

Brandywine won their eighth straight PSUAC Softball championship with near duplicate 8-0 wins over Penn State Schuylkill and Penn State New Kensington. The only difference? The number of innings needed to pick up the wins.

Brandywine won their semifinal against Schuylkill in six innings on the back of April Lewandowski in the circle. Lewandoski pitched a gem, striking out four and scattering three hits. Three teammates on the offensive side finished with three hits apiece, as Lexi Bussenger, Kaylee Mushinski and Payton Landis combined for nine of the 11 Brandywine hits. Jess James had the other two hits for Brandywine as all of the offensive damage came two through five holes in the lineup. Bussenger, James and Mushinski each scored twice, while James, Mushinski and Landis each added two RBIs.

In the championship bout, Brandywine needed five innings to put an end to the PSUAC tournament. Their opponents, Penn State New Kensington, was seeking its first softball title since 2004, but couldn't get off the ground offensively. Crystal Cassario allowed just four hits as her defense impressed behind her. New Kensington struck out just twice, but couldn't string together hits to push a run across.

James, Cassario and Karly Rees had two hits apiece in the championship game, with Cassario doing it all in the title game with three RBIs to go with her effort in the circle. Rees and Mushinski each had two RBIs as well.

Brandywine takes the PSUAC's automatic bid with them to the USCAA Small College World Series slated for next week in DuBois, Pa. where they are the no. 2 seed in the 10-team field. Both New Kensington and Schuylkill earned at-large bids and will join the conference champions in the national championship tournament. Mont Alto, who was eliminated in the first semifinal game on Sunday, also received an at-large bid to the USCAA event.
