PSUAC Student-Athletes Excel in Classroom after Outstanding Athletic Seasons

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - After a record-setting year of athletic achievements, student-athletes in the Penn State University Athletic Conference also excelled in the classroom.

The PSUAC welcomed nearly 1,500 student-athletes during the 2022-23 academic year across all sports, with a total of 812 earning PSUAC All-Academic honors. To be selected to the PSUAC All-Academic team, student-athletes must have semester GPA's above 3.0 during their season of competition or a cumulative GPA above that mark after a full year. In addition, 240 PSUAC student-athletes earned USCAA National All-Academic team awards, which recognizes students in their second year or higher who have a cumulative GPA above 3.5.

Penn State Mont Alto led the pack with 98 PSUAC All-Academic honorees, and held the crown with 33 USCAA National All-Academic selections as well. Penn State Beaver had 82 PSUAC All-Academics while Penn State Fayette finished with 29 USCAA National All-Academics as they garnered the second-most among conference members in their respective categories.

Penn State Schuylkill had the highest athletic department GPA as their 117 student-athletes combined for a 3.37 GPA. Penn State Shenango had the second-highest department GPA at 3.27. In total, the nearly 1,500 student-athletes combined for a GPA of 3.09.

Overall, 150 student-athletes graduated from a PSUAC campus during the 2022-23 academic year, which is one of the highest totals in history. Historically, many student-athletes transferred to University Park after completing two years at a Commonwealth Campus, but as campuses offer more baccalaureate degrees more student-athletes are staying for four years to enjoy all that their respective campus has to offer.

The academic success comes on the heels of the most successful year ever for PSUAC teams on the national level. Four PSUAC programs won USCAA Small College National Championships in 2022-23, including at least one in every season. Mont Alto captured the USCAA Division II Volleyball National Championship, its first ever, while Penn State Wilkes-Barre won the USCAA Men's Division II Basketball title for the second time in five year. Then the PSUAC swept the USCAA Small College World Series in baseball and softball as Penn State Brandywine captured its first softball crown right before Penn State DuBois picked up their fourth baseball championship since 2018.

In addition to their success in the classroom and in their sport, PSUAC student-athletes logged more than 2,500 community service hours on their campuses and in their local communities.
