Penn State Brandywine Captures 7th Straight PSUAC Softball Title

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State Brandywine collected their seventh straight PSUAC softball championship on Monday at Beard Field at Nittany Lion Softball Park with a 3-2 win over Penn State Hazleton. Brandywine pulled off the sweep, taking the best-of-3 series 2-0 after their 13-2 triumph on Sunday.

Monday's game was tighter throughout, as the teams went back-and-forth with runs. Brandywine struck first as Meghan Ferry picked up where she left off, hitting an inside-the-park home run on a long fly ball that richocheted off the glove of the right fielder and to the wall. Ferry motored around and took advantage of a slow relay to score the game's first run, just one at-bat after her grand slam ended Sunday's game one.

Hazleton would answer quickly, loading the bases in the bottom of the first and tying the score at 1-1 on an Ashley Wilson RBI groundout.

Crystal Cassario and Rebecca Baum each showed why they were All-Conference selections over the next two scoreless innings before Brandywine would strike again in the fourth by loading the bases and using a Gianna Terpolilli walk to plate their second run of the day. Wilson would even the score two innings later with an RBI single to right center, knotting the game at 2-2.

But Brandywine would not allow the tie to remain long as Jess James doubled in the seventh and scored on a Payton Landis single two batters later for a 3-2 advantage. Cassario would retire the side in order in the bottom of the inning to claim the title and bring the trophy back to Brandywine for another 365 days.

Brandywine earns the PSUAC's automatic bid into the 2022 USCAA Softball Small College World Series, which starts Monday, May 16th in DuBois, Pa. Hazleton had already earned an at-large bid into the event as their season will continue with a quest for a different trophy.
