Penn State Brandywine Wins 6th Straight Softball Title

DuBois, Pa. - Penn State Brandywine won their sixth consecutive conference softball title on Tuesday, capturing the crown just over a year after the 2020 season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Brandywine, the East Division's number one seed, topped West number one seed Penn State Mont Alto 8-0 in a morning match-up at Heindl Memorial Park in DuBois.

Brandywine started fast, plating seven runs in the first inning to put the pressure on Mont Alto, who needed two wins today to claim the championship. Payton Landis had a two-run single in the first, and teammate Sarah Moore landed the big blow four batters later with a bases loaded triple to make it 6-0. Brandywine tacked on another run in the inning to make it 7-0 before adding their final run in the third on a Rachel Cherubini RBI single. Cherubini finished the day 3-for-3 and also scored a run as Brandywine's eight run advantage forced the run rule into effect after 4 1/2 innings.

Rebecca Halford picked up the win in the circle for Brandywine, scattering five hits in five innings. Mont Alto's McKenna Sas pitched in two hits, including a double, but was unable to move the final 90 feet to cross the plate and extend the game.

Brandywine receives the PSUAC's automatic berth into the 2021 USCAA Small College World Series. Mont Alto, along with Penn State DuBois, have each received at-large bids to the USCAA event. The USCAA tournament begins Monday, May 17th in DuBois.
