Hazleton freshman Samantha Varela has been named this week's PSUAC Student-Athlete of the Week for softball as a hitter. Stritzinger at least one hit in all four games through a 3-1 week for Brandywine. The righty notched a 5-of-6 performance at the plate, recording three homers and a total of ten runs batted in, through the double-header set of victories over SUNY Delhi.

In the 13-0 win, Varela went 3-of-3 through game one, including a massive three-run homer in the first inning, a two-run homer in the second frame, and then uplifting the Lions with an RBI single in the third inning.

The utility player drove in all four of Hazleton's runs in game two with a grand slam in the first inning. The freshman would finish the game 2-of-3 at the plate as Hazleton hung on for a 4-2 victory over SUNY Delhi to complete the weekend. 

The hitter finished the week with ten RBIs, five hits and three homeruns for an overall batting average of .833.

Samantha currently resides in the PSUAC standings for the following: third place for earned run average with 2.71, third place for homeruns with three and fifth for runs batted in with 14.
