Brandywine Overcomes 16-Point Halftime Deficit; Tops Scranton 62-58

MEDIA, Pa. -- Colin Hockenbrock (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) capped a 16-point second-half rally by sinking a go-ahead layup with 23 seconds left as the Penn State Brandywine men's basketball team overcame a 16-point halftime deficit and defeated Penn State Scranton 62-58 on Tuesday night.

Hockenbrock, Johnta Dunson (Philadelphia, Pa./Freire Charter) and Dillon Jones (Wilmington, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech) fueled the Lions' second-half rally by combining to score 40 of Brandywine's 46 points over the final 20 minutes, while Jamar Wright (Wilmington, Del./Conrad School of Science) aided the defense with six second-half steals.

Brandywine endured cold shooting throughout the first half as the Lions connected on just one field goal during the final 10:42 and five field goals overall during the opening half, falling behind 32-16 entering intermission.

The Lions began their comeback with 17 minutes to go in the final period behind three-straight baskets from Dunson. Hockenbrock added a pair of buckets as the Lions pulled within six by the 15:12 mark.

Five minutes later, two Dunson free throws brought Brandywine within four and Hockenbrock followed with a layup to trim the margin in half at the midway point of the stanza; however, Scranton answered with the next eight points to push its lead back to double figures.

Brandywine continued to fight back as Jones sandwiched two of his four second-half triples around a Hockenbrock basket and Brandywine climbed within two at the 3:42 mark.

After a Scranton bucket, Jones buried another triple and Wright stole the ensuing inbound pass, sinking a lay in to give Brandywine the lead. Five Scranton points during the next 45 seconds gave the visitors the lead once again before Hockenbrock tied the count at 58-58 by connecting on a jumper with 58 seconds to play.

A steal by Wright during Scranton's next possession gave the Lions the ball back. Hockenbrock drove to the basket and buried a layup to make the count 60-58 with 23 ticks remaining on the clock. Scranton had an opportunity to tie or take the lead, but Wright again produced a steal and sank two free throws with 6.5 seconds to go to put the game away.

Hockenbrock collected 19 points, 15 rebounds, four steals and three blocked shots, while Jones and Dunson each tallied nine points. Dunson grabbed nine boards, while Devon Jones (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington) added eight points and Wright chipped in five points, six rebounds and six steals.

Brandywine overcame 29 percent shooting from the field by scoring 31 points off 22 Scranton turnovers. The Lions held a 56-50 edge on the boards.

Brandywine (2-3, 2-1 PSUAC) will return home Friday night to host Penn State Greater Allegheny at 8:00 PM.
