Shenango Knocks Off Brandywine 67-61

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Shenango outscored Penn State Brandywine 9-2 during the final three minutes of regulation to claim a 67-61 triumph over the Lions in a back-and-forth men's basketball affair Friday night.

The game, which featured nine tied scores and 11 lead changes, saw Brandywine knock down eight first-half three-pointers en route to a four-point edge at the break, but the Lions connected on just 2-of-15 long-range attempts after the break. One of the first half triples came off the hands of Johnta Dunson (Philadelphia, Pa./Freire Charter) as his running three beat the buzzer for a 36-32 Brandywine lead.

Dunson added another triple to begin the second period, giving Brandywine its largest lead of the evening, but the Lions went scoreless for the next four minutes as Shenango climbed within one.

A three-pointer gave Shenango a one-point advantage at the 14:34 mark and the visitors pushed the margin to six at the halfway point of the stanza.

Brandywine answered with a 10-1 surge, jumpstarted by a three-point play from Dillon Jones (Wilmington, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech). A.J. Dreger (Newtown Square, Pa./Bonner-Prendie) followed with a triple and Colin Hockenbrock (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) threw down a fast-break dunk before Devon Jones (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington) added a basket at the 8:20 mark, making the score 54-51 in Brandywine's favor.

Shenango countered with a three-pointer to knot the count at 54-all, but Dunson's two free throws helped Brandywine go back in front.

The teams swapped the lead during the ensuing three minutes, including Dunson's basket that put Brandywine on top 59-58 with 3:35 to go; however, the Lions were limited to just two more points the rest of the way.

D'Montez Owens scored the next three points for the visitors, handing Shenango a 61-59 lead and Shenango sank all six of its free throw attempts during the final minute to claim the victory.

Dunson paced the scoring effort with 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting and added five assists. Dreger knocked down four triples en route to 12 points, while Dillon Jones notched nine points and four boards. Hockenbrock tallied eight points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Brandywine shot 36 percent from the field and buried 10 triples.

The Lions (3-8, 3-4 PSUAC) will play host to Penn State New Kensington Saturday at 2:00 PM.
