DuBois Tops Brandywine 71-68

MEDIA, Pa. -- For the second-straight day, a pair of free throws with 13 seconds left were the difference for Penn State Brandywine as the Lions' men's basketball team fell 71-68 against Penn State DuBois on Saturday afternoon.

Brandywine held a 68-67 lead, but two free throws from Jaiquil Johnson gave DuBois the lead. A Brandywine turnover led to a DuBois layup that gave the visitors a three-point edge with 10 seconds to go.

The Lions had a pair of possessions during the final 10 seconds, but could not get a shot off in an attempt to tie the score.

Johnta Dunson (Philadelphia, Pa./Freire Charter) led three double-figure scorers with 20 points on 10-of-14 shooting, while Colin Hockenbrock (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) produced 16 points, 14 rebounds and four blocked shots. A.J. Dreger (Newtown Square, Pa./Bonner-Prendie) notched 10 points and Jamar Wright (Wilmington, Del./Conrad School of Science) pulled in seven rebounds.

Neither team led by more than six points in a game that featured nine ties and 10 lead changes.

Dreger's triple gave Brandywine a 29-23 edge with 6:38 to go in the first half, but DuBois countered with the next 10 points to open up its largest lead of the day. The Lions rallied during the final minutes of the opening period, using three free throws and Dunson layup during the final 1:21 to build a 42-38 halftime advantage.

The visitors briefly took the lead early in the second half, but three Dreger free throws put Brandywine back in front 49-47 at the 15:03 mark. The Lions maintained the lead, stretching it to six points twice over the next 11 minutes, but Kaleb Prior's pair of free throws with 4:36 to play began DuBois' comeback bid. The visitors outscored Brandywine 8-4 during the next 2:28 to get within one before taking the lead during the final seconds.

Brandywine shot 47 percent from the field and produced a 41-34 edge on the glass, but was marred by 24 turnovers.

Brandywine (2-5, 2-3 PSUAC) will have a week off before facing Penn State Lehigh Valley on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 7:00 PM.
