Lions Clipped By Double-Overtime Goal In USCAA Tournament First Round

CHARLESTON, West Virginia -- Wilson Juma's goal late during the second overtime period handed seventh-seeded Maine-Machias a 1-0 victory over No. 10 seed Penn State Brandywine during the opening round of the USCAA Tournament at cool, rainy Schoenbaum Stadium on Wednesday morning.

Juma's tally came with just 3:28 remaining in overtime when he broke free from a defender and sent a shot into the far corner of the cage, allowing the Clippers to move into the quarterfinal round. Brandywine will face either Cleary University or Washington Adventist in a consolation match Thursday at 9:30 am.

Making its second consecutive trip to the USCAA Tournament after earning the automatic bid as the PSUAC champions, Brandywine collected six shots on goal, but was blanked for the first time in nearly two months.

Lions' freshman goalkeeper Patrick O'Neill (Morton, Pa./Ridley) stopped a pair of shots during the first half, as did Maine Machias net minder Robert Devone, both of which came off the foot of junior Bill Walleekendeh (Chester, Pa./Chester), to keep the game scoreless entering halftime.

Brandywine controlled play for much of the second half, outshooting the Clippers 8-1, but was unable to get on the scoreboard. The best chance for the Lions came during the early portion of the half when Devone stopped junior Manny Weldemicael's (Philadelphia, Pa./Wyoming Park) shot and then allowed a shot by senior Frenc Baro (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) to squirt between his legs and to the goal line before a defender booted the ball away. Moments later, junior Nabieu Sesay (Sharon Hill, Pa./Academy Park) blasted a shot from just outside the box that rang off the cross bar and bounded out of play.

UMM registered the only shot during the overtime periods before Juma found the back of the net during the 107th minute.

O'Neill stopped four shots, while Baro and Walleekendeh both recorded two shots on goal. Devone blocked all six shots he faced for the Clippers.
