Balanced Scoring Effort Leads Brandywine To Victory Over Valley Forge

PHOENIXVILLE, Pa. – Ten players got in the scoring column for the Penn State Brandywine women's basketball team as the Lions handed the University of Valley Forge a 70-52 defeat on Thursday night.

Four of those scorers reached double figures, led by Madison D'Ambrosio (Springfield, Pa./Springfield), who posted a 17-point, 12-rebound double-double.

Amanda Floyd (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) tallied 15 points, Nikki Velez (Gloucester, N.J./Gloucester City) collected 11 points and three steals, while Ally Giannakarios (Brookhaven, Pa./Sun Valley) added 10 points.

Brandywine scored 12 of the game's first 15 points and led by as many as 12 points during the first quarter before Valley Forge netted the final five to get within 17-12 after one period.

The Lions maintained their five-point edge at halftime, but Valley Forge quickly cut the margin to three early in the third period; however, Floyd netted five-straight points and Giannakarios chipped in two baskets during an 11-3 Brandywine run that pushed the margin back to double figures.

Brandywine continued to pull away, using three consecutive baskets from D'Ambrosio to begin the final quarter to swell the lead to 56-36. Two D'Ambrosio free throws with 6:10 to play opened up the biggest lead of the evening at 22 points and the Lions would cruise to the finish.

Brandywine limited Valley Forge to 30 percent shooting and held a large edge in rebounding at 57-38. The Lions trekked to the free throw stripe 19 times, making 13, while the Patriots sank just two free throws during the game.

Saturday afternoon will mark Senior Day for D'Ambrosio and Velez when Brandywine (15-7, 11-4 PSUAC) hosts Penn State Scranton at 1:00 pm.
