Immaculata Edges Brandywine 74-61

IMMACULATA, Pa. – Plagued by foul trouble for the second-straight game, the Penn State Brandywine men's basketball team was downed by Immaculata 74-61 on Saturday afternoon.

The Lions limited the Mighty Macs to 31 percent shooting, including a 4-for-30 mark from three-point range, but the difference in the game came at the free throw stripe. Immaculata made 30-of-33 free throws, while Brandywine connected on 16-of-21. Brandywine shot 35 percent from the floor.

Six points from Jaden Kelly (Philadelphia, Pa./GAMP) during the first three minutes helped the Lions run out to a 10-2 edge. Immaculata slowly chipped into the Lions' lead, tying the game for the first time with a pair of free throws at the 8:42 mark.

John Proctor's free throw gave Immaculata its first lead at 20-19. The Mighty Macs pushed their edge as large as nine on three occasions during the final five minutes before Brandywine netted the final five points of the period, using layups from Colin Hockenbrock (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) and Devon Jones (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington) and a Kelly free throw to trim the margin to 34-30 at the break.

Immaculata never let Brandywine get closer than four points in the second half as the hosts outscored the Lions 14-3 during the first six minutes.

IU stretched its lead to 21 with 6:08 on the clock before a late Brandywine run, capped by a Jones free throw at the 2:03 mark, cut the margin as low as 10 points.

Hockenbrock and Johnta Dunson (Philadelphia, Pa./Freire Charter) shared the team lead with 16 points, while Jones added 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Kelly notched nine points and three assists and Dunson produced a team-best five steals.

Brandywine (0-2) will open conference play Friday night at Penn State Beaver at 8:00 PM.
