Berkeley College New Jersey continues to win as Marcelo Pizarro's late goal pushes Knights past Lions, 2-1

The Berkeley College New Jersey men's soccer team picked up a thrilling victory on Wednesday afternoon, as Marcelo Pizarro's goal in the 79th minute lifted the Knights to a 2-1 win over Penn State Brandywine in Media, PA. With the triumph, Berkeley College continued to roll, winning its fourth straight contest, and sixth in its last seven tries as the team improved to 7-6 on the year. The Lions had their three-game winning streak snapped, as they dipped to 6-7 on the 2014 campaign.

In the first half, the teams clawed back-and-forth for 19 scoreless minutes until Berkeley's Jacob Tafur received a beautiful cross pass from Ribhe Huzien and buried a ball into the bottom left corner of the net (at 19:12) to give his team a 1-0 lead. Bryan Costa also picked up an assist on the play. That tally would be the only goal scored on either side in the opening 45 minutes of play, as the Knights held a 1-0 lead at halftime.

Penn State Brandywine would tie the score in the 55th minute (at 54:19) when Nicholas Abhulimen would score off a scramble in the box to even the game at one goal apiece. Patrick Lutes picked up an assist for the Lions on that goal.

The Knights regained their composure after that goal, as Pizarro would notch a goal, beating Penn State Brandywine netminder Patrick O'Neill at 78:46 to give his team a 2-1 advantage as Berkeley College erupted in celebration. Costa picked up his second assist of the game on that score.

Penn State Brandywine was unable to notch an equalizer during the final 11:14 of the contest, as the Knights held on for a spirited victory. The win pushed the Knights over .500 for the first time this season.

Berkeley College's defense put forth another stellar effort, allowing the Lions to record to just nine shots for the game - and just three in the second half. The Knights have now allowed only four goals in their previous seven games. Additionally, Berkeley netminder Christian Vidreiro made five stops on the afternoon - all in the opening session.

The Knights out-shot the Lions 24-9 for the day, and Berkeley College had six corner kicks to the Lions' three. Penn State Brandywine was whistled for nine fouls on the afternoon, while the Knights committed seven.

Berkeley College will look to win its fifth consecutive contest on Sunday afternoon, as the Knights will take on Washington Adventist at the College of Staten Island. Start-time is scheduled for 2:00pm.
