Lady Lions win first game of the season, defeat Joilet CC 9-1
Penn State Beaver defeated Joilet CC 9-1
North Myrtle Beach, SC- The Lady Lions evened their overall record at 1-1 on Tuesday, defeating Joilet CC by the score of 9-1.
Senior Pitcher Jessica Hughes (Hopewell/Hopewell, PA) pitched a gem in the win. She threw 5 innings, giving up three runs while walking one and striking out three on her way to her first vicotry of the 2020 season. Offensively, Beaver scored in every inning, plating 3, 1, 3,1, and 1; to the teh contest 9-1.
In the first inning, sophomre Tyler Johnson (San Antonio, TX) lead off the bottom of the first with a single. Junior Lacey Weible (South Side/ Hookstown, PA) followed with a single and both Weible and Johnson moved up on a bobble. Sophomore Michelle Cisco followed with a walk. After a double play looked like it may shut the inning down; freshman outfielder Cassadie Speed drove a two out triple to deep right center to plate two. Freshman Skyler Duffee (New Castle/ New Castle, PA) followed with a 2 out single of her own to plate Speed and give the Lions an early 3-0 lead. From that point, Hughes dominated, and the offense kept adding on to invoke the mercy rule, and win 9-1.
In the win, Speed led the way, going 2 for 3, with a double and a triple, scoring twice and driving in three. Duffee went 3 for 3, scoring twice and driving in two.
Up next for the 1-1 lady Lions is Rio Grande on Wednesday morning.
