Baseball Defeats Penn State Shenango

MYRTLE BEACH, Sc. – Penn State Schuylkill defeated conference opponent Penn State Shenango 14-3 at the Ripken Experience on Wednesday.

Following three scoreless innings, a triple by Jared Sterner (Hamburg, PA / Hamburg Area High School) drove in the first run of the contest at the top of the fourth inning. A single by Ethan Naftzinger (Hamburg, PA / Hamburg Area High School) plays later gave Schuylkill a 2-0 advantage at the end of the frame.

Schuylkill took a commanding 3-0 lead following a Brenan Adams (Pottsville, PA / Pottsville Area High School) single with Owen Zimmerman (Shoemakersville, PA / Hamburg Area High School) positioned at third base. Shenango fought their way back into the contest as a triple and a single gave them their first run of the game. A home run on the next play evened the score at three heading into the sixth inning.

Schuylkill regained traction during the in the top of the sixth as triples from Conner Licklider (Hamburg, PA / Hamburg Area High School) and Nate Gilbert (Shoemakersville, PA / Hamburg Area High School) drove in a total of three runs for Schuylkill. Schuylkill continued to roll as a single to centerfield by Adams and a sac fly by Sterner gave Schuylkill an additional two runs for the inning, ending with five total.

A triple by Adams at the top of the seventh inning with the bases loaded extended Schuylkill's lead to 12-3. Schuylkill would earn two additional runs before the end of their drive, before limiting Shenango's scoring opportunities at the bottom of the seventh to clinch the win.

Adams, Gilbert, Licklider, and Sterner all hit triples for Schuylkill while Zimmerman hit a double. Gilbert finished with three hits and five RBIs. Owen Shoop (Tower City, PA / Williams Valley High School) pitched 6.0 innings on the mound, winning his matchup, striking out seven opponents while only allowing three runs.

Schuylkill (4-3 overall, 0-0 PSUAC) will take on Bay College for their next matchup.
