Baseball splits doubleheader with PSU-Mont Alto

Hampton, VA – The Apprentice Baseball team was back in action for a Saturday doubleheader as they welcomed in Penn State-Mont Alto to Historic War Memorial Stadium.  The Builders were looking to get back in the win column after dropping a home mid-week match-up, while the Nittany Lions were playing their first games of the season.  This was an early USCAA contest for both teams and a win would go a long way in the teams' journey to the qualify for the Small College World Series.

Game 1

Andrew Castine took the mound for Apprentice, but PSU-Mont Alto got on the scoreboard first to take the early lead, 1-0.  However, in the 2nd inning, Holden Sandridge, Matt Phoebus and Jake Day produced three straight singles and then Riggs Ellis got aboard on an error, and when all was said and done, the Builders would go out in front, 2-1.  The Nittany Lions had an answer in the 4th inning, pushing two more runs across the plate to regain the lead, but in the 6th inning, Thomas Packert would hit a leadoff triple and eventually score on a Holden Sandridge Sacrifice Fyl, to once again take the lead.  Unfortunately, PSU-Mont Alto tied the game in the 7th, sending the game into extra innings, and would score the winning run in the 9th, as Apprentice dropped the game by a final score of 5-4.

Game 2

Looking for the split, the Builders sent Tyler Knapp out for the start, and he received plenty of support from his offense as Maxwell Burcham, Thomas Packert and Hunter Riss loaded the bases as each drew a walk.  Jake Day would draw this 4th walk in a row, bringing home the first run of the game and then Camden Weston smacked a single to right field giving Apprentice the advantage, 3-0.  The Nittany Lions added 2 more runs, to take the lead, in their half of the 4th inning, but that did not last long as the Builders found a way to get two runners across the plate in the final inning, to grab the win, 5-4.

Apprentice will return to action this Tuesday afternoon as they host Paul D. Camp Community College at Historic Ware Memorial Stadium.  This will be the third time the two teams have met in the young season and first pitch is scheduled for 3:00pm.
