Men's Basketball Loses on the Road to Penn State Hazleton

HAZLETON, Pa. - Penn State Schuylkill Men's Basketball fell to PSUAC opponent Penn State Hazleton on Tuesday.

Back-to-back baskets by Makhi Jones (Harrisburg, PA / Susquehanna Township High School) ignited a 7-0 run for Schuylkill to kick off the contest. Hazleton promptly responded, going on a 15-2 run to seize a three-point lead with 13:39 remaining in the half. Hazleton managed to sustain their lead throughout the half, holding a 40-31 advantage heading into the final portion of the game.

Four consecutive baskets by Dashawn Dixon (Baltimore, MD / Catonsville High School) at the start of the half initiated a 24-15 surge by Schuylkill, ultimately securing a 55-54 lead after a successful layup by Jahmir Tyrell (Paterson, NJ / John F. Kennedy High School) with 11:37 to play, prompting a Hazleton timeout.

Hazleton embarked on a 15-2 run after their break to establish a 69-57 lead with 8:05 remaining. Schuylkill remained resilient as a 14-6 stretch narrowed it to a two-possession contest with 3:27 remaining. Trailing 77-71 with 36 seconds left, Antwuan Byrd (Harrisburg, PA / Bishop McDevitt High School) was fouled on a three-point attempt. Byrd proceeded to convert all his free throws, bringing Schuylkill within 3 points. As Schuylkill engaged in the foul game, Hazleton managed to secure the victory with successful free throws down the stretch.

Jones led Schuylkill with 20 points on the night. Dixon recorded a 15-point, 14-rebound double-double with 3 blocks. Byrd added 13 points, 7 assists, and 4 steals. Tyrell contributed 16 points and 7 rebounds coming off the bench.

Schuylkill (3-8 overall, 1-3 PSUAC) will take on Penn State Dubois on Friday, followed by Penn State Greater Allegheny on Saturday.
