Shenango Women's Volleyball drops three-set match to Penn State Mont Alto

Sharon, Pa – The Penn State Shenango Lady Lions volleyball team struggled in their second home bout of the young season as they dropped three straight sets to Penn State Mont Alto on Saturday at The F.H. Buhl Club. The Lady Lions were topped (14-25, 12-25, 17-25) and fell to 1-3 on the season.

The Shenango Lady Lions had been very competitive in their prior three contests, but troubles maintaining their serve proved to be their undoing in this intense battle.

The First set proved to be the most difficult for Shenango. Mont Alto took an early lead, and never looked back. At one point led by the serving Kylie Delinger Mont Alto got off to a 0-4 lead. They increased that lead to 2-10, and never surrendered the lead taking the set 25-14.

The Second set saw The Lady Lions of Shenango on more familiar ground. Shenango and Mont Alto exchanged a multitude of exciting volleys and digs. The action was intense, and each team battled for each point.  Mont Alto began to pull away late in the set behind the serving of Kylee Gooding. The Shenango Lady Lions eventually broke her serve but were unable to secure a consistant effort on their own, despite their gritty effort. Mont Alto took a 10-point lead at the 19-9 mark, and captured the set 25-12.

The Third set was an emotionally charged back-and-forth tilt. Shenango finally began to find their serve as Mont Alto struggled to handle the serving of Fr. Emily Filicky and Giaona Caputo. The two freshmen kept the match close as The Lady Lions held a 6-6 tie early on. Mont Alto then began to pull away, only to be reeled back in as Liv Vogel and Katie Richards also began to have success with their own serves. A few errors eventually led to a Mont Alto lead that Shenango could not overcome. They Lady Lions dropped the set 17-25, losing the match 3-0.

Penn State Shenango is back on the road this week as they travel to Butler County Community College on Wednesday, September 22 @ 6pm.
