Lions Finish Off Season Sweep Of Schuylkill

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine completed a four-game season sweep of Penn State Schuylkill as the Lions won twice on the road Saturday afternoon to extend the team's winning streak to six consecutive games. Brandywine claimed game one by a 5-1 count and earned a 7-3 triumph in game two.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 5, Penn State Schuylkill 1

Eight days after picking up a pair of wins over Schuylkill, Cara Fabiano (Bristol, Pa./Bristol) continued her mastery of the hosts, firing seven innings of one-run ball. She fanned five and scattered five hits, holding Schuylkill scoreless for the first 6.1 innings before a run-scoring groundout ended her shutout bid.

Brandywine received two-hit efforts from Arianna Segich (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City), Alyssa Sullivan (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) and Fiona Warren (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) to pace the offense.

Segich, who stole three bases and added two more in game two, walked and later scored on a wild pitch after swiping two bags to give the Lions a 1-0 first inning lead.

Warren singled and scored on Rachel Cherubini's (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) base hit in the third to double the lead. Sullivan added an RBI single in the sixth, later crossed home via wild pitch and then tacked on another run-scoring hit to complete the scoring one frame later.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 7, Penn State Schuylkill 3

Sullivan added three more hits in game two, as did Alexandra Szpindor (Pottstown, Pa./Pope John Paul II), who homered for the second time in as many days, lifting a solo shot over the wall to put the Lions in front 1-0 after one inning. Szpindor, who finished a double shy of the cycle, produced two runs scored and a pair of RBI.

Nikki Velez (Gloucester, N.J./Gloucester City) made the score 2-0 one frame later with a RBI single, but Schuylkill struck for three runs against Szpindor in the third to jump into the lead.

Brandywine immediately responded by pushing five runs across in the fourth. Two walks to start the inning put a pair of runners on base for Haley Grossi (Monmouth Junction, N.J./South Brunswick), who delivered a triple, scoring Fabiano and Morgan Meoli (Woolwich Twp., N.J./Kingsway Regional). Grossi scored on a Velez groundout, making the score 5-3. Three batters later, Szpindor added a run-scoring triple and then came around to score when Sullivan singled.

Szpindor held Schuylkill off the board the rest of the way to earn her third victory of the week. She struck out one and allowed seven hits in seven innings in the circle.

Brandywine (9-11, 4-0 PSUAC) steps out of conference play for a doubleheader at Delaware Valley University on Tuesday beginning at 3:00 pm.
