Brandywine Downed By GA In High-Scoring Matchup

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Greater Allegheny defeated Penn State Brandywine 111-91 in an up-tempo matchup of Penn State University Athletic Conference men's basketball teams on Saturday afternoon.

Greater Allegheny netted the first three baskets of the game, but Brandywine rallied to tie the score at 9-9 on a three-pointer from Ketquan Gatewood (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Collegiate Prep). The visitors answered with 13 of the next 20 points; however, the Lions drew even once again with three consecutive buckets as the score was tied at 22-22 fewer than 10 minutes into the first half.

GA continued its hot shooting, pulling away from the Lions behind a 15-2 surge and scored 23 points during the final 5:57 of the opening half to build a 60-42 lead at the break.

Brandywine again battled back, trimming the deficit to single digits when Andrew Persaud (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) canned a jumper with 15:41 to go, capping a 14-5 Lions' run; however, Greater Allegheny used its lethal three-point shooting, burying triples on consecutive possessions, and the deficit once again swelled to double digits.

Casey Oliver's three-pointer with 8:11 remaining upped the GA lead to 20 points and the visitors held on for the victory.

Greater Allegheny knocked down six second-half triples and 15 overall during the game and connected on 41 field goals overall (86 attempts), averaging more than one made basket per minute.

Brandywine put five players in double figures led by Persaud, who poured in 24 points and knocked down four three-pointers. Gatewood coupled 17 points with 11 rebounds for his seventh double-double, while Johnta Dunson (Philadelphia, Pa./Freire Charter) set a season high with 16 points.

Pat Gallagher (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) notched 14 points and six boards, while Naifes Smalls (Philadelphia, Pa./PE&T Charter) was 4-of-6 shooting, scoring 10 points.

Brandywine shot 46 percent (30-65) from the field and made nine three-pointers, but was marred by 24 turnovers and 22-of-38 shooting at the free throw stripe.

Brandywine (4-5, 2-3 PSUAC) will visit Penn State Schuylkill on Tuesday at 8:00 pm.
