ALLENTOWN, Pa.—The Penn State Beaver men's soccer team kept its winning streak alive after taking a 6-1 road win against PSUAC rival Penn State Lehigh Valley in Sunday's conference bout.
Only four minutes into the first period, Beaver landed on the board first after freshman Jake Ross (Munhall/Steel Valley) took the feed from sophomore Danylo Yakymov (Kiev/Grand Private Lyceum). Yakymov was next to put points on the board for the Lions five minutes later, connecting on a pass by sophomore Tyler Van Kirk (West Mifflin), 2-0. Lehigh Valley answered back with a goal at the 22nd minute, cutting Beaver's lead down to one. The teams locked-in defensively and diverted each other from scoring in the remaining minutes, allowing Beaver to hold on to the lead at halftime (2-1).
The Lions looked revitalized after the break, which included the fast footwork of Yakymov, who assisted on two of three Beaver goals to create a comfortable distance from Lehigh Valley on the scoreboard (5-1). At the 86th minute, freshman Chris Bohach (Conway/Freedom Area) cushioned Beaver's third PSUAC conference victory with the final goal of the game (6-1).
Senior John Kazmierczyk (Conway/Quigley) and Bohach both earned one goal on two shots and each had two on goal. Ross also recorded one goal on two shots and one on goal. Freshman Jake Saldivar (Darlington/Blackhawk) contributed one goal on three shots with three on goal, followed by senior John Valiga (Ambridge), who scored on goal on four shot and four on goal. Lastly, Yakymov contributed one goal on 10 shots and had nine on goal.
Beaver outshot Lehigh Valley 12-3 in the first period and 24-1 in the second. Beaver also shot four corner kicks to Lehigh Valley's zero. At the net, the team had two saves against the three shots they faced.
Beaver is now on a three-game winning streak, improves to 3-3 overall and 3-0 in the PSUAC conference standings. The Lions will host Carlow University in their next game on Tuesday, Sept. 24. The game is slated for 4 p.m.
