Brandywine Sweeps Scranton For Fifth-Straight Win

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine extended its winning streak to five-straight matches as the Lions eased to a three-set victory over Penn State Scranton by scores of 25-14, 25-9, 25-15 on Wednesday night.

Brandywine received nine kills from Brandi James (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) and seven from Kira Thorne (Alconbury, England/Alconbury) after hitting .338 as a team on the night. Rebecca Gonzalez (Clearwater, Fla./Washburn Academy) handed out 16 assists, while Madison Swenson (Chadds Ford, Pa./Kennett) posted 12 assists along with two aces and four digs.

Hannah Sarafinas (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) set down eight aces as Brandywine collected 14 service points overall.

Alsatia Haas-Tome (Norwood, Pa./Interboro) paced the Lions in digs with 10, while Gianna Anthony (Newtown Square, Pa./Sacred Heart Academy) collected nine and Rikelle Taylor (Nottingham, Pa./Solanco) registered three solo blocks.

Brandywine got off to a slow start to the first set, but erupted for 10-straight points, including two James kills and four aces from Sarafinas, to pull away with the frame, winning 25-14.

The Lions cruised in the second set, using three of Thorne's kills and two aces from Haas-Tome during a 9-1 run, to build an eight-point cushion. Brandywine swelled its lead as large as 18-3 following a kill from James before settling for the 25-9 triumph.

Scranton hung around during the final set before back-to-back kills by James and Gonzalez started a 6-0 spurt to put the Lions in front 22-13. Kills by Thorne and James and a Scranton error accounted for the final three points of the night, sending Brandywine to its second sweep of the visitors this season.

Brandywine (10-12, 9-1 PSUAC) heads to New Jersey Thursday night for a match at Rutgers-Camden beginning at 7:00 pm.
