Lady Lions roll past Penn State New Kensington in first conference game of the season
NEW KENSINGTON, Pa.–The Penn State Beaver women's basketball had a dominant performance against PSUAC rivals Penn State New Kensington during Tuesday night's blow-out 88-46 victory.
At the helm of the offense was junior guard Diamond Thomas (Pittsburgh/Carlynton), who nabbed a double-double tonight with 16 points, 10 steals, five rebounds and three assists, followed by sophomore forward Jimya Chambers (Phoenix/Westview), who recorded 13 points, six steals, one rebound and one assist.
Rounding out the double-digit scoring tonight was sophomore guard Emily Keener (Utica), who earned 11 points, three steals, two rebounds and one assist, followed by sophomore guard Alexis Cross (Columbiana), who racked up 10 points, six steals, four assists and one rebound.
1st quarter: Beaver got off on the right foot in the first quarter by scoring 11 unanswered points in the opening minutes of the game. They Lady Lions never looked back and maintained a double-digit advantage for the remaining quarter, outscoring New Kensington 25-10.
2nd quarter: At 5:43, Thomas had a big steal, which she followed up with a layup to put a comfortable distance between Beaver and New Kensington and build the lead to 21 points (35-14). The defense held New Kensington to only 6 points in the quarter, giving Beaver a 19-point edge at halftime (46-27).
3rd quarter: Beaver continued to control the tempo of the game in third and a late 3-point jumper by Beaver led by sophomore forward Mikayla Womer (Jackson Center/Lakeview) at the one-minute mark pushed the lead to 58-39.
4th quarter: The Lady Lions said hot and had their best quarter performance in the four, scoring a game-high 30 points while holding New Kensington to only 7 to claim their first PSUAC conference victory of the season (88-46).
Box Score Highlights: Beaver shot 45.1 percent from the field, 28.6 percent from 3-point range and 47.6 percent from the charity stripe. Beaver forced 49 turnovers by New Kensington while only allowing 17 by the home team.
The Lady Lions will host Bethany College in their first home game of the season tomorrow, Nov. 19. The game is slated for 6 p.m.
