Women's Basketball Falls in PSUAC Semi Finals

Mont Alto, Pa- A 10-2 Penn State Fayette (14-10, 13-2) run to open the second half produced a lead that the Greater Allegheny women could not overcome, as they were beaten 81-60 in their PSUAC Final Four match-up.

  Freshman guard Taylor McCallister (Norwin) gave GA a sprinting start, hitting a 3-pointer to open the game.  At the 13:00 minute mark, Freshman guard Jasmine Williams (East Allegheny) would give the Greater Allegheny women an early 12-7 lead. 

  A three minute scoring drought allowed Fayette to go on a 9-0 run, pushing themselves ahead 16-12.  Sophomore guard Monica Poupakis (West Mifflin) halted the run with a 3-pointer of her own, bringing GA to within 1, at 16-15. 

  After a 19-19 tie, three straight baskets from Jasmine Williams gave Greater Allegheny a 27-25 lead late in the half.  Fayette would then quickly counter, and headed into the break on an 8-3 run, leading 33-30.

  A game that was so closely contested in the first half, soon turned troublesome for the GA women.  Fayette opened the second half on a 10-2 run, pushing out to a 43-32 lead.  A quick 5-0 Greater Allegheny run brought the women to within 6 at the 15:30 mark, but they would not get any closer than that.  Three Fayette women carried their offense, scoring 67 points between the trio- Jill Guthrie scored 28, Caitlyn Wontroba scored 24, and Kasey Ruble scored 15.

  Playing the final game in her collegiate career, Senior forward Rachel Halaszynski (Elizabeth Forward) led GA in scoring with 16 points, while also grabbing 8 rebounds.  Monica Poupakis ended the game with 14, with fellow guard Taylor McCallister adding 13.  Freshman forward Christina Floyd (St. John Neumann) was stellar on the glass, grabbing 17 rebounds.

  Following their Semi Final loss, the Greater Allegheny women ended a strong season with an 11-15 record overall, finishing 9-7 in the PSUAC.
