Lady Lions Improve to 5-1 in PSUAC

Uniontown, PA-  The Penn State Beaver Lady Lion softball team improved their PSUAC record to 5-1 on Tuesday, defeating Penn State Fayette by the scores of 12-7 and 8-1.

In game one, Beaver got on the board in the first, plating 2 in the top of the inning.  Fayette responded in their half of the first, scoring twice, and knotting the game at 2-2 after one.  The scored remained tied until the fourth.  With two outs, Freshman Nicole Bowersox (Penns Valley/Penns Valley, PA) reached on a bunt single, and then stole second.  Sophomore Lauren Pier (New Brighton, New Brighton, PA) then followed with an RBI triple to give Beaver the lead (3-2).  Fayette again answered, tying the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth.  Fayette took their first lead of the day in the fifth (4-3), scoring a single run on a one out triple.  Beaver responded big in the top of the sixth.  Freshman Rachel Borell (Downingtown East/ Downingtown, PA) led off the inning with a single.  Bowersox reached first on an error while sacrafice bunting, moving Borell to third.  Pier then followed with a three run homerun, her PSUAC leading fourth of the year, to give Beaver the lead.  Beaver scored four more times in the inning to take a 10-4 lead into the seventh.  Beaver picked up two more insurance runs in the seventh.  Senior's Lindsey Scialdone (Ellwood/ Ellwood City, PA) and Ashley Watkins (Seneca Valley/ Cranberry Twp, PA) led the inning off with back to back doubles and Sophomore Myranda Raymond (Brashear/ Pittsburgh, PA) scored Watkins on a sacrafice fly.  Fayette did score three in the bottom of the seventh, but fell short 12-7 on the day.  Junior Korey Freyermuth (Perry/Pittsburgh, PA) picked up her 11th win of the season, pitching seven innings and striking out four.

In game two, Beaver struck first again in the top of the third when Pier doubled in Borell to take the 1-0 lead.  Just as in the first game, Fayette answered in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 1-1.  From this point on, it was all Beaver.  In the fifth, Senior Jamie Karpinski (Quigley/Beaver, PA) tripled and then scored on Sydney Brinton's (Brashear/ Pittsburgh, PA) RBI ground out.  In the sixth Beaver got two more (4-1).  Scialdone and Watkins started the rally with back to back singles, which was then followed by Raymonds two RBI triple.  Beaver opened it up in the seventh, tacking on four more runs to make the game 8-1.  In the win, Freyermuth recorded her 12th win of the season, pitching seven innings, giving up one earned run on six hits and four strike outs.

In the two wins, Beaver pounded out 23 hits, 6 doubles, 4 triples, and a home run.  The Lady Lions will return to action, and return home, on Sunday, April 15th, when they host Penn State Schuylkill.  First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
