Beaver Splits Double-Header With New Kensington

Monaca, Pa- The Lady Lions of Penn State Beaver (8-16, 3-1 PSUAC) played their first home game of the season against Penn State New Kensington (New Kensington, Pa).

In game one, Beaver became productive on offense in the bottom of the second. Jamie Karpinski (Quigley/Beaver, Pa) started off the inning with a double, followed by a single from Sydney Brinton (Brashear/Pittsburgh, Pa). Rachel Borrell (East Downington/Downington, Pa) singled soon after, and the bases were loaded. Nicole Bowersox (Penns Valley/Penns Valley, Pa) recorded a RBI after a single ran in Karpinski. Lindsey Scialdone (Ellwood City/Ellwood City, Pa) recorded a single of her own, scoring in both Borrell and Brinton. Ashley Watkins (Seneca Valley/Cranberry Township, Pa) also singled, and scored in Bowersox. Beaver took a 4-0 lead going into the third. The Lady Lions scored two more runs in the fourth, and three in the sixth, goin on to win game one 9-0. Korey Freyermuth (Perry/Pittsburgh, Pa) pitched six innings, allowing one hit, and struck out five.

In game two, New Kensington scored one run in the top of the first. Beaver replied in the bottom of the inning, with a run from sophomore Lauren Pier (New Brighton/New Brighton, Pa). The Lady Lions found themselves down 1-9 however by the end of the top of the sixth, but both Freyermuth and Brinton scored, bringing the game to 3-9. Pier scored once more in the bottom of the seventh, but Beaver dropped game two 10-4. Freyermuth pitched seven innings, giving up 12 hits, allowing 10 runs, and striking out five players.
