Beaver Cruises Past Fransican

Steubenville, OH- The Women's Softball Team of Penn State Beaver (5-13, 0-0 PSUAC), went on the road again this afternoon to face off in a double-header against the Lady Barons of Fransican University (Steubenville, OH).

In game one, Fransican went on the board first, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Beaver didn't strike back until the top of the fourth, when both Lindsey Scialdone (Ellwood City/Ellwood City, PA) and Korey Freyermuth (Perry/Pittsburgh, PA) were hit by a pitch, advancing them both to first and second base. Sydney Brinton (Brashear/Pittsburgh, PA) and Jamie Karpinski (Quigley/Beaver, PA) were both walked, scoring in Scialdone. Rachel Borrell (Downington East/Downington, PA) recorded a single and RBI scoring in Freyermuth afterwards. The game was tied at two a piece going into the bottom of the fourth. Myranda Raymond (Brashear/Pittsburgh, PA) scored in the top of the fifth off of a RBI from Freyermuth, but Fransican scored two more runs in the bottom. Borrell, Karpinski, Raymond, and Ashley Watkins (Seneca Valley/Cranberry Township, PA) all scored in the top of the sixth off of RBI's from Scialdone, Watkins, and an error from the Lady Barons. Five more runs were recorded in the top of the seventh, and the Lady Lions went on to win game one 12-4. Freymuth pitched seven innings, giving up 10 hits, four runs, and striking out five players. Borrell lead the team offensively, with three hits.

In game two, the momentum stayed on Beaver's side, as the Lady Lions jumped to a quick 4-0 start in the first inning. Lauren Pier (New Brighton/New Brighton, PA) stole the show in the top of the fourth, recording her first homerun of the season, scoring in herself and Borrell. The Lady Lions scored 10 runs in the fourth inning, and the Lady Barons only other run didn't come until the bottom of the fifth. Beaver went on to win easily in game two 14-3. Freyermuth pitched five innings, only giving up five hits, three runs, and struckout nine players.

The Lady Lions improve their record to 5-13 in the USCAA Conference.

Beaver goes back on the road Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at 3:30 p.m against Thiel College (Greenville, PA).
